Did you know that enjoying an at-home aquarium can lower stress and blood pressure? And the more fish you have, the greater the benefits you will see!
There are two options when it comes to aquariums: saltwater and freshwater. While it’s true that saltwater tank fish require a bit more care than freshwater fish, you can absolutely still create a thriving saltwater aquarium, even as a beginner!
If you’re considering starting your own aquarium at home and wondering which fish are best for those new to fish care, you’ve come to the right place. Listed below are a few of the best saltwater fish to add to your new aquarium.
Now then, let’s get started!
1. Clownfish
If you or your child is a Nemo fan, this sweet story might be your inspiration to start an aquarium. Well, Nemo is a common clownfish and the perfect saltwater aquarium fish for beginners!
Clownfish require at least a 30-gallon tank but are quite easy to care for. They are commonly bred in captivity, so they are easy to find. And if they weren’t cute enough, clownfish will even take food from your hand once they build up trust in you.
2. Pajama Cardinalfish
The pajama cardinalfish is named as such because of it’s brightly colored and polka-dotted appearance, making it a fun addition to any aquarium. PJ cardinalfish are carnivores but don’t worry, they are peaceful in nature.
Like clownfish, pajama cardinalfish need a 30-gallon tank at a minimum and enjoy living with others of their species.
3. Butterflyfish
Butterflyfish are graceful creatures who love nothing more than a good hiding spot. Along with requiring a large tank (at least 75 gallons, but possibly more depending on the type), they are rather picky eaters. Be sure that you know the subspecies of butterflyfish you are purchasing, as different types have different dietary needs.
But as long as your butterflyfish has the right food and few places to hide out, it will fit in happily with other peaceful fish.
4. Firefish
These vibrant fish require a smaller tank than those mentioned previously; they will do just fine in a 10-gallon tank. But firefish have big personalities! You may want to consider a larger tank as they are expert jumpers and might try to escape if the lid is removed.
Similar to the pajama cardinalfish, firefish are carnivores, but non-aggressive. They will eat any appropriate foods offered to them, just keep in mind that unless you have a large tank, they prefer to be the only firefish around.
5. Longnose Hawkfish
The longnose hawkfish, while beautiful, can be a bit of a challenge. This is because they are easy to care for but semi-aggressive. They only need about 30 gallons of water but are known to attack fish with similar bodies (like firefish) because they are carnivorous and quite territorial.
The best way to combat this is to give them some hiding places and introduce them to the tank last but with the right tankmates, they are a high-energy, exciting addition to your fish family.
The Best Saltwater Tank Fish for Beginners
Well, there you have it! With any (or all!) of these saltwater tank fish, you will have a flourishing aquarium and a great starting point for your new hobby. Remember, just like any other pet, fish need lots of love and attention.
And saltwater fish, in particular, require a little bit more care than their freshwater counterparts. Make sure that you keep a close eye on the pH levels of your water, your tank clean, and your fishy friends fed with the proper type of food.
Finally, keep in mind that some fish like their space! Clownfish, for example, are great in groups, but firefish prefer to swim solo.
