Traveling with Fido? 5 Helpful Tips

For most dog owners, their four-legged friend isn’t just a sometimes companion, they’re a member of the family. As a result, vacations, business trips, and other traveling require Fido to go along.

Unfortunately, for those who have never traveled with a dog before, this may present a few, unique challenges. Don’t worry! There are a few tips that can help ensure both human and dog have a great, stress-free time.

1. Packing Tips

While it may seem like a no brainer that a dog needs food and water while on the go, some people still forget it. It’s also a good idea to take along a convenient carrier while traveling, such as the K9 sport sack.

Some of the other must-pack items to put in the suitcase include the food and water (as mentioned above) along with food and water dishes. Other necessary items include some type of dog bed and plenty of toys. Being in a car for several hours is boring for anyone, including a dog. Giving them something to do will help to keep them happy and satisfied on the ride.

2. Find Accommodations Early

It’s never a good idea to arrive at a hotel and just assume Fido is welcome. The same is true if a person plans to stay with family or friends.

It’s a good idea to check ahead of time to determine if the location is dog-friendly. While the majority of places accommodate pets (usually for an additional fee) this isn’t the case in all locations.

3. Don’t Stress About the Dog

Most dogs travel well. But, it’s important to know, they aren’t going to maintain the same sleeping, eating, and drinking habits they have on normal days.

A person should think about themselves and how they travel. The traveler should consider if they usually stick to the same routines, eating and sleeping habits when traveling. For most, the answer is “no.” As a result, they shouldn’t expect their dog to
.
All a person needs to do is to bring everything their pup needs and release all expectations. In most cases, if the human is happy, so is the dog.

4. Know the Dog’s Boundaries

Does the dog become agitated around small children? Or, is there a long and grueling hike planned? It’s important to consider these things when taking a dog along.

If there are things that make the dog uncomfortable, take note and ensure to avoid these situations when possible. By doing this, everyone will remain happier and feel less stressed during the trip.

5. Take Frequent Breaks When Driving

In most cases, being in a car for multiple hours is something no one wants to do. This includes the dog.

As a result, it’s smart to take breaks at regular intervals. Most rest areas have dog-only areas where Fido can get out (on a leash of course) stretch his legs and have a potty break. While each dog is different a good rule of thumb is to stop every hour or so to let everyone stretch their legs.
