There’s something inherent in human nature that attracts us to beauty. This beauty is up to the viewer to determine but can be seen in people, places of the world, items we create, homes, cars, jewelry, events, and animals.
One of the most attractive and beautiful possessions we have is our teeth. These are shown almost instantly upon meeting another individual and depending on how well you have taken care of them, you will be treated differently. Many go through different alternatives to obtain the perfect smile. Such options are “smile makeovers”, dental implants, whitening, and veneers, a rather popular option.
In this article, we will be discussing the topic of porcelain veneers and the process behind them.
A Little Backstory
When I was younger, I lived in another country with my close-knit family. The impoverished town I was raised in had such poor water quality, my teeth acquired a yellowish-brown tint and some small cavities on the exterior. Growing up, my school years were tough. You see, this effect made me very self-conscious every time I met someone new or spoke with someone like a teacher, friend, or parent. They would not stop staring at my teeth. I could see a face of disgust that they politely tried to hold back. When I turned 18, I made it my mission to fix my teeth so that I wouldn’t have to revisit the turmoil of my previous years. I saved up enough money through various gigs and went to my local dentist to see what could be done. In one day, I had two veneers placed on top of my old, disgusting front teeth, and I don’t regret the decision one bit.
This alternative made a difference in perception. These veneers changed how future friends saw me. My teeth show off a personal dilemma, my upbringing. Veneers were able to cover that.
What Are Veneers?
Veneers are ultra-thin shells of material that have almost the same color as teeth and are placed or made to cover the front part of the original teeth. Though there are different types of veneers available, The better option when getting veneers is porcelain. not only because of the color but because they will resist stains and will have properties similar to real teeth, as opposed to veneers made of another material.
The Veneer Process
As I explained in my story, the process contains three steps: treatment planning and diagnosis, preparation, and bonding.
First Step
During diagnosis and treatment planning, the dentist will talk to you to see if veneers are the best option for you. Sometimes, all people need is a deep bleaching treatment instead of veneers because these laminates can only be placed by shaving a substantial amount of tooth enamel.
In this first step, the dentist will let you know some of the limitations, such as being careful what you bite into because the veneers could potentially come off. I remember the first session being was basically a chance for the dentist to obtain the right size of teeth for me. They took x-rays of my mouth from every angle to see how the new veneers would affect the space inside my mouth.
Preparation
During the second visit, the dentist will shave off about 1/2 a millimeter of the enamel of the teeth being worked on. The impression of each tooth is taken and then sent to a laboratory where the real dental porcelain laminates are made. You are sent home with temporary veneers since it does take anywhere from 3-4 weeks for the real ones to be made.
Bonding
On the third and final visit, the bonding happens. Your temporary veneers are removed and your teeth are shaved further to create a better fit. There’s a special type of cement that is added to the veneer so that it will stay on there for as long as you’re alive, literally. Once the veneer is attached to the tooth with this cement, the dentist will shoot a light beam through it so that the chemicals in the cement will activate and it will harden almost instantaneously. This is crucial in order for you to have a perfect fit and so that your bite is close to perfect. The final step is to remove any of the excess cement by polishing and checking your bite. Once both you and the doctor are happy with the results, you’re sent home with a really happy and new smile.
I couldn’t believe the changes it made. To this day, it is one of the best choices I have ever made. I recommend it to anyone embarrassed by the appearance of their teeth. Yes, perhaps it’s a cosmetic peeve many of us have, but not having to receive those looks I used to get when I was younger made the change worth it.
