It is almost impossible to describe the feeling of violation that you experience when your home is broken into and it is not something you ever want to come home to, which is why it makes sense to do what you can to prevent burglars from targeting your property.
When a burglar is surveying a property to see if it is a potential target they will be looking for a number of key visual clues and they will often have a checklist of things they don’t want to see, forcing them to think twice and look elsewhere.
Here are some of the preventative measures you can take to deter a would-be burglar.
Fix up some outside lighting
A burglar wants to be undetected when they are breaking in and that’s not going to happen that easily if your house is well lit on the outside.
A great security measure would be to install some motion-triggered lights around your home so that a burglar will not be able to exploit any dark corners. Many thieves are looking for an easy target and most won’t want to risk being seen entering a property, which is likely when you have ample security lighting.
Fit decent locks
It is always worth investing in decent locks for your exterior doors and windows.
You can ask a locksmith to come and evaluate your existing locks and they should be able to sort out a suitable upgrade.
Professional burglars know what they are looking at and if they see a decent lock that is going to be hard to penetrate it should put them off trying.
Always someone at home
Most burglars will want to target an unoccupied property, which is why you want to try and give the impression that you are at home even when you are not.
A good way to do this would be by using timers that turn on lights and stereos at random times.
This will cast doubt with the burglar and they won’t want to risk confronting someone in the property.
Collect your mail regularly
Another simple clue that burglars will look out for is mail stacked up, which is a telltale sign that you are away and have been for a few days or more.
If you are going to be away on vacation, cancel subscriptions and don’t arrange any deliveries. It would also help if your neighbor could keep a lookout and collect any mail for you while you are not there.
Dogs are a great deterrent
If you love dogs they make great pets and the real added bonus is that burglars don’t like to target a home where loud barking is going to alert someone that a visitor is approaching.
There are plenty of thieves who are very wary of dogs, so when you can enjoy their friendship and protect your home at the same time, getting one is a real no-brainer.
Video cameras work
No burglar wants to be caught on camera and video surveillance systems are reasonably inexpensive these days.
The majority of thieves won’t go near home with security cameras.
Don’t make it easy
Finally, it is worth remembering that many burglars are opportunistic, so they target properties with windows or doors open.
Make sure you don’t leave any windows open when you go out, as that is making your home an easy target.
If you follow some of these simple tips it should help reduce the prospect of you experiencing the horror of discovering that your home has been broken into.
