How To Keep Your Pet Owning House Tidy

Pets enhance our lives in so many ways – they give us love, companionship, and help to ease our stress. But one thing they aren’t so good at helping with is keeping our homes tidy! Having a furry friend and a neat, fresh home sometimes feels like quite a job. But there are ways that you can keep a clean house and a happy pet, with these top tips.

Clean Pets, Clean House

It’s amazing how often this straightforward practice is disregarded! When a pet goes outside, they generally get covered in mud, dust and dirt – and that is perfectly okay. But when you don’t groom them outside before they enter the house, that’s a whole heap of mess getting tracked into your carpets! Get into the habit of keeping a box of grooming tools outside by the back door that you can use when your dog or cat wants to come in. Dry brush them thoroughly or a quick wash down with plain water or pet shampoo for a dog after a muddy winter walk is a good idea – make sure you hose down your boots as well while you’re at it! If you have a utility room try to keep your dog in there while it’s drying off. Some breeds of pet also need regular trimming or de-shedding to keep them neat.

Keep Your Cupboards Stocked

The occasional accident or bad odour when you have pets is inevitable – but you can react quickly if you keep a stock of cleaning products handy. Baking soda is a brilliant catch all for smells – pour it on top of any urine accidents on carpets or sofas to neutralise bad smells and clean fabric. Simply shake over, leave to absorb and then vacuum up. White vinegar is also good for cleaning pet beds and toys. Also make sure you are storing that smelly shiba inu food in an airtight container to avoid that ‘doggy smell’ in the house.

Create A Doggy Detailing Station

Just like a valet details your car, do the same for your dogs by setting up a station with everything you need in the entryway of your home or by the back door to quickly deal with messy paws and dirty costs. Things to include could be a heavy rubber mat to protect floors, dog towels, wipes and a spray bottle. You could also use it to keep your dogs leash, any winter dog coats they wear and a stock of poop bags for walkies.

Get A Great Vacuum

Pet owners need to invest in a quality vacuum cleaner that can handle increased dirt and pet hair. Those with an extra strong suction, a high quality filtration system and a decent brush should be top of the list. Shedding pets mean daily vacuuming to keep on top of things, and make sure you are emptying and cleaning the filters each time you use it. A handheld dirt buster can also be useful for cleaning upholstery and quickly zapping tracked in mud.
