Kids need space to play that is safe and a haven for them. It is their sanctuary, where they can sleep, dream, play, learn and use their imagination to their heart’s content. Of course, play spaces do not have to be in bedrooms, but it does make the most sense. Everything of their own is in there, and it really should be a space they can call their own. It is somewhere to take their friends and for them to be proud of.
Solid Furnishings
Solid, well-made furnishings are a good start just as you can see in the kids bed collection at Cuckooland. This helps to give the bedroom a feeling of calm, rather than them having to be careful because a leg might come off a chair or something similar.
Buying good furniture might cost you a bit more to start with, but it will save you money in the long run because it will last much longer.
Durable Flooring
A youngster’s bedroom needs to made of tough stuff and the flooring is no exception. Keep to medium toned colors, as they will not show every little mark. It needs to be fairly soft for them, but a deep pile carpet is not a good idea. Perhaps a muted, lower piled carpet for the warmth it will give in the winter with a nice fluffy rug at the side of their bed. These could be in contrasting colors, although white is best avoided.
Keep The Walls Plain
Paint the walls in plain colors and then decorate them with pictures to give some color. You could put a curved dado rail half way up, and paint the bottom half of the room a few shades darker than the top. The curved dado is so that they cannot hurt themselves on it, and the darker bottom half is because children tend to mark walls very easily and this will show less if you paint it a little darker.
Avoid using wallpapers that depict their favorite characters as this will very quickly become not so flavor of the month. Then they will want it changed, and you will have to start all over again. If you really must have wallpaper at all, try to stick to just one wall so that it not such a major job when the time to change it arrives.
Bed Linen and Curtains
The bed linen and curtains is the easiest thing to replace if you want to update the room your child calls their own but can give extra color and feeling to their sanctuary. If they really want something with their favorite characters on, this is the time to do it. If in a couple of years time they have outgrown that program or film, buying new bed linen and curtains will be much cheaper than having to redecorate the whole room.
Cotton is the best material to choose as it washes better if there are spillages, and the stains are more likely to come out.
Storage Spaces
The importance of ample storage cannot be stressed enough. Kids always have things they want to hang onto for what seems like forever more, and they need the space to keep them until you can persuade them otherwise. But more than that, they need ample storage to be able to put all their things away when they want to. If they feel like cleaning their own room, no matter what age they are, that should be encouraged. They will soon lose interest in doing it if they have nowhere to put anything.
It does not have to be lots of storage boxes that take up floor space. There could be baskets that will slide into the bottom of their wardrobe or baskets that fir on the wall out of the way. Floor space is at a premium in most bedrooms, so saving it in any way you can help.
Changing It as They Get Older
Hopefully, your little one will love the space you have created for them and will sleep peacefully in there each night. What do you do as they get older though, and want the room changed to suit them? With plain walls and carpets, it is very easy to change a toddlers bedroom into one that will suit a 12 years old, as even the furniture will still be OK The main thing you will have to change is the accessories, such as the bed linen, curtains, pictures on the walls and any other small items such as those.
