Winter’s on its way, and with it a whole host of excuses for the fit and lazy alike. “It’s too cold”, “it’s raining”, and “I’ll start in January” can be heard in households around the world.
But here are a few reasons why keeping fit is actually even more important as the long nights draw in.
Get Your Fix of Vitamin D
During summer, just 10-15 minutes of sunlight exposure can be enough to keep you topped up on Vitamin D. But, during winter, and with a limited number of food sources, it can be more difficult to come by. That’s why it’s even more important to get outdoors, soak up some rays and give your bones a chance.
Avoid the Winter Blues
We all surely know by now that exercise releases endorphins, but the mood-boosting power of exercising during winter is even better! With the lack of humidity, stimulating cold air and your body working even harder to stay warm, you’ll barely be able to wipe the grin off your face following a winter workout.
Learn the Importance of Stretching
In cold weather, your muscles contract, making your more susceptible to injury. Use your winter workouts to properly perfect your dynamic stretching routine (think big arm circles and walking lunges) and don’t forget to properly warm up and cool down. Why not also try swapping your sneakers for a pair of Vibram five fingers to reduce running injuries?
Fight off the Flu
Research has shown that regular exercise can boost your immune system, circulating immune cells more quickly around the bloodstream. So why wait for the winter sickness to get you? Be proactive and get your body ready to fight off those bugs!
Keep Warm
Tempted to turn up the thermostat? Head out for some exercise instead. Not only will you save on your heating bill but the energy produced during a workout can be enough to keep you warm for hours!
Dodge the Winter Weight Gain
In the season of comfort food and festive treats, trying to resist indulging is JUST. SO. DIFFICULT. So whilst you might not be winning any weight loss awards, at least you won’t have to feel quite so guilty about the cake that just fell in to your mouth (honestly!).
Become a Calorie Crunching Machine
Whilst your body is working harder to regulate your core temperature you’ll be burning calories just tying your laces! Nothing says motivation like those extra pounds you’ll be shedding by getting your butt in gear and outside.
Grow Your Heart Three Sizes
Maybe it’s only the Grinch whose heart can change that dramatically, I got carried away with the Christmas spirit. But for a regular exerciser working out in the winter actually CAN make your heart stronger as it works harder to distribute blood throughout the body.
If this list isn’t motivation enough to get you outside, I don’t know what is!
