Running your own business can get very overwhelming, especially if you’re taking on tasks that are completely new to you. Even though you’re now specializing in your specific talent, you also have to learn several new skills to be an effective business owner if you want your startup to survive its first year. However, you shouldn’t try to learn everything at once. Ask for help on things that are too much for you, and focus on acquiring one or two skills at a time to help you boost your business. Here are a few skills that might help you down the line.
Communication
With so many different ways to stay in touch with your partners, suppliers, and customers both in and out of the office, it’s important that you perfect the art of communication. The ability to express yourself clearly by email, over the phone, or through various messenger apps will decide whether a job gets done effectively and quickly, or if there’s too much confusion that sets everyone behind. You will need to be able to communicate effectively with employees, managers, and customers in-person, online, in writing and/or on the phone to be considered an effective business owner.
Marketing
Businesses can live or die depending on the efficiency of your marketing strategy. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s not enough to tweet about your upcoming launch, or send a Facebook reminder to your family and friends – they’re too much riding on your business for you to fail. In the initial planning stages, it might be a good idea to get an online MBA in marketing to give you a better idea of what a good marketing strategy needs. You could also hire professional to do this for you, but if finances are in issue it’s best to do it yourself. Besides, it’s a useful skill to have in the future no matter what happens.
Languages
Even if you don’t have plans for a global platform just yet, the ability to speak another language will take your business to the next level whenever you’re ready. There are now so many ways for you to pick up this valuable skill in your spare time that there are no more excuses for putting it off. You can download several apps on your phone and learn a few phrases every few minutes, and language CDs are still a useful learning tool. However, if you prefer some interaction, you can hire a tutor to teach you at a time to suit you, or you could join a language club in your area and learn with other people.
Web design
All entrepreneurs know that the best way to launch a business is by having a website; something that people will recognise even when you have no physical premises. There are plenty of web designers to create a professional website, but it’s useful to know how to do it yourself so you can fix any bugs. You can learn this either online, or some night classes at a community college.
