Have Fun In Your Twenties Then Prepare In Your Thirties

Right. So you have blitzed through your twenties and are now tackling your thirties with a triumphant success. Who said that getting older was hard? The problem is, what you do now is going to have a huge impact on your older life and whilst we become more confident as we hit our forties and fifties we want to be confident in our looks and health too, right?

You don’t need to have a sky high budget to make the most of your looks you just need to understand the changes ahead and nail your new vintage.

Firstly, our face changes as we get older. Women, and men, suddenly discover crows feet, wrinkle lines and you will notice a sag in your chin. This can result in the most incredible cheekbones you have ever had as we lose the plumpness that once surrounded them, but it can also result in a turkey gobbler neck. No one wants that. Men need to take control of their skincare regime in their thirties and start taking on a few facial muscles exercises. Whilst women need to ensure their make up reflects the changes in their facial structure. Pale lipstick and a soft smoky eye is really flattering on an older women, however you may notice you have started to look a little more washed out so don’t go too heavy on the color as you will look like the corpse bride if you aren’t careful. Unfortunately you might also start looking like an extra for the Rocky Horror Show if you go wild with bright shades. Go with matte, neutral colors such as gray or brown and be aware that the creases in your eyes may hold any shimmer in the make up. This can cause some pretty depressing moments if you are working closely to younger colleagues. So avoid anything that might sink into your wrinkles.

In your twenties and thirties you can get away with a matte foundation however your skin will start to dry and dull so you might need to avoid that matte look and go for something a little more dewy. Tinted moisturizers are your new best friend, start by mixing a little of your foundation in with the tinted moisturizer and even consider using a facial tanner to bring a little color to your face. You will also need a fantastic moisturizer and you need to use it all the tie. E45 cream may be something you used to see in your mother’s cupboard but there is a very good reason for that. It is also great for sensitive skin.

As you get nearer to the menopause you will find your oestrogen levels fall. This may mean you start sprouting whiskers. There are some great facial epilators on the market although if you have a bigger budget you could consider Electrolysis. Annoyingly whilst hairs start growing where you don’t want them, it starts falling out where you do want it. Men suffer this too. Women should opt for something which helps to promote healthy hair follicles such as rubbing olive oil into the problem areas for 5 minutes a day. Men who are losing their hair could use finasteride tablets which can stop testosterone from closing the follicles.

Investing in a silk or satin pillowcase isn’t just going to give your bedroom a super indulgent look of elegance and class. It will also stop your face looking like an elephant’s bottom when you wake up. If you really want to help slow down the aging process then your thirties is the prime time to start a course of Botox. By reducing the amount of wrinkles you have now, you can ditch the Botox when you hit your mid forties and you will have given your skin a little extra life. Just be wary about using Botox in your later years as it can give you that frozen expression which is a dead give away of your age. Alternative to surgery could include a chemical peel although that does give you a longer recovery time due to the fact it burns off a few layers of your skin. Ouch. Perhaps instead you could use makeup to help boost your looks (you too boys) A lip pencil will help soften your Cupid’s bow and give you a delicate fuller look. Avoid lip fillers. We don’t need to tell you why. Just look up ‘duck face’ on the internet and you will understand the thinking behind this.

Looking after your teeth is a brilliant way to keep the years off. However even those of us with a great oral routine will find the years of knocking back wine in our twenties has taken effect. Getting your teeth cleaned by a hygienist is a great start but you could also look at having your teeth whitened, or even investing in a good set of veneers. Just remember the rule that your teeth should be two shades darker than the whites of your eyes. Or you will look like you have a false pair of tomb stones in your mouth.

Your hands are going to give you away too. So in your thirties make sure you take extra care of them. Keep a natural moisturizer in your handbag and in your car then give them a quick boost throughout the day. We know that marigolds make you feel like a Stepford wife, but they protect your delicate skin from drying out and from chemicals that we use to do the washing up, or even worse, bleach. Keep your nails clean and opt for a neat oval shape. Using coconut or almond oil will help keep them strong as you head into the autumnal years.

You will find that gray hairs are sprouting up all over the place, whilst you can use a dye to give you a little extra coverage, this can be damaging to hair which is already losing its natural oils. You need to be careful with your conditioner and opt for volume enhancing conditioners and consider getting the chop for a shorter bob.

We know, it’s depressing. But if you start changing things now, you will look incredible when you hit your fifties. So get on it!
