We taught you how to keep your pets healthy in winter, and now I’m here to show you how to keep your dog in good health this summer, too! Having a pet is a big responsibility, you know. There is a lot that you need to think about and consider – especially, with the weather getting warmer! So, read on to ensure that your dog stays well this summer.
Get Them Insured
Really, your dog should be insured all year round. But it is especially important to have them covered in the summer when they are most likely to suffer illness from the heat! Dog insurance isn’t too pricey these days, and is available from a wide array of companies and veterinary practices. If your pup gets a little heated and falls ill, you’ll want to have the pet insurance that you need in place should it require treatment at the vets. Don’t take any chances – it is worth the small expense. For many it is simply a case of getting round to it – so make time!
Don’t Leave Them In The Car
Next up, be sure to take your dog out of your car with you when traveling anywhere. Leaving a dog in your drunk can be catastrophic for its health. Temperatures in vehicles (even with the windows down) can soar very quickly. Heatstroke can kill a healthy dog in just 15 minutes if you are not careful – so don’t make the mistake of leaving your dog in the back of your vehicle! The summer sun can be dangerous to your dog, just as it can with your skin.
Keep Them Active
The best way to keep a dog healthy is to make sure that it remains active. However, the likelihood is, that in summer, your dog is going to be a bit more lethargic than normally. Make sure you take it for a walk once a day, and try and fit some exercise in with that too. A bit of fetch or following you around on your bike will do him or her the world of good! The only thing you have to be careful about is overdoing it. Heatstroke can really effect your dog, as we’ve mentioned. So, just keep the activity short and sweet and be sure to get your dog drinking lots of water upon your return home.
Avoid Noisy Areas
Summer is a time for festivals, outdoor concerts, and fireworks, so avoid these at all costs. Your dog’s mental health is going to be scared by loud noises. You know how much dogs hate a fright! Stick to the local park, preferably during quiet times. It is probably best to walk your dog in the morning or evening rather than at the peak of the daytime anyway. This is to avoid both you and the dog suffering from excessive heat.
Hopefully, this post will help you keep your dog happy and healthy this summer – don’t take any risks, and you’ll be fine! All the best.
