It is not often that you will find a religious person who is severely depressed. When a person is deeply involved in religion, they feel a sense of self-worth that people who are clinically depressed often lack. Practicing religion is an activity that naturally uplifts the human spirit, making the person more likely to appreciate their life and all the blessings they have. If depression starts to sink in, a person only needs to go to church or read the Bible to be reminded that his or her life does matter.

4. Religion helps to reduce stress

Many people have extremely busy lives. They might have a full-time job, several kids to take care of or have a full load of classes to study for. Whatever the case may be, stress is a big problem for millions of people. A wide variety of physical problems are triggered by suffering from stress over an extended period of time. Practicing religion allows a person a way to escape the chaos of his or her everyday life. Every person needs time to simply unwind and decompress every once in a while. Religion is a great way for people to focus their thoughts and relax, enabling the body and mind to recover if they have been overworked.

5. Religion improves mental health

There was a study conducted that compared 200 people from five different religions. The directors of the study made some interesting discoveries. For example, the more spiritual and religious a person is, the better their mental health will be. This was the case throughout all of the five religions that were the focus of the study. The reason for this is believed to be the inner peace that faith gives to people.
