Friends of ours are having a baby soon, and they are currently revamping their spare room and turning it into a nursery. It’s taken me back to when our little one was born – and all the excitement, fear, and trepidation we felt at the time. It’s easy to forget as they get older, but every once and awhile something like a friend having a first baby can bring it all flooding back. They asked us for a few tips about our nursery, and although it took some work to remember all the way back, I put together a list for them. And, today, I thought I would share it with you – enjoy!
Don’t get overexcited
OK, so is there anything more exciting than planning your first baby’s nursery? It’s an evocative time, and there will be a lot of emotions running haywire for both of you. And, let’s be honest, if you are anything like me, then as soon as emotions become involved, then decision making goes out of the window! But, you should try and think with a sensible head on, because there is a lot of money at stake here. Try to avoid buying things that you want, rather than need, as the cost of creating a nursery can skyrocket quickly.
Stick within your budget
It’s best to have a budget and stay well within it if possible. There will be lots of things that you want to buy, of course. But, you know what? When I ask our daughter what she remembers about her nursery, the answer is always ‘nothing’. There are some things you just don’t need to spend on – paint, or wallpaper, for example. As long as it is safe, I would avoid spending big on either of those. They will be drawn on, ripped off, and sprayed with all kinds of stuff by the time your child reaches the age of two. You should also look for cheap Moses baskets, too. There isn’t any point in spending a lot on them, as they only last a matter of months. Save your money where possible and budget it on a robust bed, and hard-wearing furniture that will last for many years, instead.
Use your imagination
It’s easy to go out and buy items for your nursery without even thinking about it – the baby industry is enormous, and they have all the bases covered. But, I like the idea of using your own imagination to decorate your baby’s nursery. Not only will you save a bit of money, but you can create somewhere truly unique for this special new person that is coming into the world. Maybe you could find an old piece of wood on your favorite beach, and turn it into a bookshelf? Or, perhaps, you could create a patchwork quilt for them out of fabrics of old dresses? I love the idea of using old things from your life to create new things – and there’s no better time to do it than when you have a newborn on the way!
I’d love to hear your ideas on how to create the perfect nursery – so feel free to get in touch!
