One of the main things that people want to learn in video editing courses is how to add special effects. As you can see from any big Hollywood movie, these are very important. Sometimes, the effects are created during the shot itself – for example, you may actually build a model of a city and then blow it up if you are making a movie about aliens invading Earth and taking over. This used to be the way that things were always done, but modern computer technology has made it easier to just create the same scene after the fact.
There are a few reasons why adding the effects in like this is such a popular idea. For one thing, it tends to cost less. A movie production company just has to hire a crew with a computer, and they can overlay a normal shot with the required effects. They do not have to pay to build a set, buy explosives and hire professionals to set those off. As computer technology gets more and more realistic, it is becoming impossible for people who are viewing the movies to see the difference anyway.
One interesting change is that special effects have caused a lot of movies to be filmed in front of a green screen, rather than on location. This allows the special effects department to add in anything that they want because the green screen is a blank slate. At the same time, they can just add in location shots.
