So, you’re moving house? How exciting. This is a new leaf, a new page, a new chapter in the grand book of life.
For me, this meant a new country, and continent. And not just once, twice, with the husband and kids in tow. It sounds mad when I say it now, but the whole process has been pretty smooth sailing.
Each of my two children were born on different continents, which is also different from where my husband was born. Let’s just say it’s always an interesting conversation going through customs control on holidays with all the multi-colored passports being handed over for check-in.
But it’s a great conversation topic, that, and the fact that my children’s names are that of mother nature. Fun times.
Choosing a Removal Company.
If using all the neighbors from down the street, or your two burly uncles on your dads’ side aren’t your cup of tea, then choosing a home removal company is the way forward.
Do some research and review checking before jumping in Mighty Movers LLC. You want a company that isn’t going to drive away with your life in the back of the van. Service like what Mighty Movers LLC has to offer might just be what you’re looking for.
Be sure to give yourself enough time before the actual date to leave the house. There is nothing worse than everyone running around panicking like an all-you-can-eat-buffet. Plan ahead.
You can also negotiate on price, stating what needs to be done or not. Like should they help with the arranging of the furniture or drop it all in the lounge and you’ll do it? Small extras like this add up as they are providing an extra service and their time.
Last thing, but not one that many people think of, have your insurance policy up to date. Not great to say but items do tend to fall off trucks.
5 Tips for Packing up a house.
- Label. Make sure each box has a clear for all to see the label and keep these boxes grouped.
- At the Top. Start the process from the top half of the house and move your way down.
- Time. Oh, the dreaded word. Give yourself enough time to pack effectively and efficiently.
- Heavy vs Light. Pack heavy or heavier items in smaller boxes, it’s easier to carry more individual items, than 10 individuals carrying one elephant of a box.
- One at a Time. Do one room at a time. You’ll be able to label each box and what’s inside without going to and from.
The ins and outs can be found here http://www.bbc.co.uk/homes/property/moving_packingtips.shtml in this super detailed article, it will make moving day a breeze.
Courtesy to the Removal People.
There’s a debate on this, but in all my moving experience, we have provided our removal company movers with lunch. I think I learned it from my mother, as she always did and when I asked her, she simply replied, it’s just good manners. And I agree.
Providing the meal will benefit the timeline of the whole process as they then don’t need to stop and leave everything to go somewhere to grab a bite. They’ll also feel appreciated, and that makes for an all-round good working moral which equals speed.
If they arrive on the day and you have a few mugs of coffee and tea ready and a packet of biscuits for dunking (all plates and platters are packed remember), it will set a good tone for the day.
Local or International?
No doubt moving house within the same country is easier, an international move doesn’t have to be all stress. And I can speak from both sides of the coin here. Watch this vlog with tips and tricks for a country move, and see the experience they went through.
You can go to the storage container on a ship route or airfreight. Or if you are lucky enough that the borders touch, then driving is probably the better option.
The last and most important task is to leave the house clean. Wipe all counters and cupboards. Sweep and mop. And give the new occupants a ‘clean’ start to their memories.
