As an adult, your bedroom should be your space. It should be the place you retreat to when you want to rest, relax and enjoy some quality alone time. This is something that can only really happen successfully if your bedroom looks and feels the part. If your room is a boring, bland, place that does not feel particularly grown up or put together, it is unlikely you will feel inspired to spend much time there. The good news is that it is fairly easy to update your bedroom into a grand, grown-up space that screams adults only.
Color Scheme
The first step to creating a relaxing grown-up bedroom is to switch up the color scheme. Neutral colors or soft blues and greens tend to be the most restful, so try to avoid bold, bright colors in the bedroom at least.
Seating
Your bedroom should primarily be for sleeping, but when you’re a busy adult, sneaking space away from the family can be difficult, which is why you should add a couple of comfy chairs, where you can sit back with a glass of wine or relax with a good book, to your bedroom.
Bedding
Think about all of the best hotels you have stayed in. The grandest, most relaxing ones that made you feel like a real sophisticated grown up are likely to have had one thing in common – a big comfy bed. Investing in the best bed you can afford, and filling it with supportive pillows and a comfy down duvet will make you feel like you’re living in the lap of luxury and give a more grown-up tone to your room. When buying bedding, be sure to get the right size comforter and pillows for the bed, so that it does not look sloppy or thrown together, and so that you will feel truly comfortable when you retire in the evening.
Declutter
Messy, cluttered bedrooms should be the preserve of young children and teenagers, sadly, this is seldom the case, and most adults have clothes and trinkets spilling over their bedrooms. This makes the room look childish, unstylish and in no way grand. So, bite the bullet and get rid of your clutter, clean up your closet and ensure that your bedroom looks clean and inviting all day every day.
Artwork
When you’re a teenager, you decorate your walls with posters of your favorite pop pinup, but when you’re an adult looking to create a grownup, sophisticated space, you hand artwork on your walls. You don’t have to spend a lot of money, but purchasing a few choice prints will brighten up the room, give you something pleasing to look at as your relax, and create an expensive look.
Furniture
If you want your bedroom to look grown-up, you need to ditch the cheap Ikea flat packs and invest in solid wood furniture, which will stand the test of time. You can often find great pieces at affordable prices in local antique shops, so you don’t have to spend a lot of money, and because they are already fully assembled, you can save a lot of time too.
If you take the time to create a more grown-up space, you will soon see the benefits in the increased levels of relaxation and calm you experience in the bedroom.
